Green issues may delay Girye project

Despite the power ministry's attempts to meet the deadlines for its ambitious ultra mega power projects, environmental issues may delay the Girye coastal power project.

"The project is in an ecologically sensitive area and this may delay the deadline," government sources said.

The project site is near Vaghotan village in the Deograh tehsil of the Sindhudurg district. The 660-1,000Mw project will be spread over 3,500 acres of rocky land near the Vaghothan river. PowerGrid is putting up a transmission line to evacuate power from the plant.

Some of the players in fray for the project are Aditya Birla Power, Ashok Leyland, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Torrent and Essar.
