Dal working president Sharad Yadav has been in touch with the leaders of the Akali factions led by Simranjit Singh Mann and Badala. However, there has not been any formal decision on the issue as the Dal leadership is awaiting for the Left parties' views. Badala had earlier parted ways with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) because of its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Left leaders, who met on Thursday in Chandigarh, decided that there would no truck with either the communal Akali-Dal-BJP alliance or the Congress.

However, the Janata Dal and the Left together would be, at best, a third force and could cut into some of the votes of either of the two political combinations: the Congress-Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the SAD and the BJP.
Meanwhile, the Dal Political Affairs Committee (PAC) authorised Sharad Yadav to finalise the party's strategy for the Punjab assembly elections.
