A scheme to provide houses to all those who don't own one in Mysore, will be launched by chief minister Jagadish Shettar here on March 21.
The scheme 'Swantha Soorina Ooru Mysore' (City of Own Houses), initiated under the housing schemes of the Centre and the state, aims to cover all the estimated 34,000 'houseless' people in the three Assembly constituencies of Mysore by providing them with a own house each and make Mysore a city of own house dwellers.
The estimate of houseless is based on a house-to-house survey of those living in rented houses in the city.

Initially, 6,000 houses are proposed to be built for the 'houseless' of the Krishnarja Assembly segment, where the estimated number of residents living in rented houses who don't own a house is at 12,500.
The chief minister will lay the foundation stone for the construction of 6,000 houses to be built under G2 category each costing Rs 6.45 lakh, of which Rs 3 lakh will be bank loan repayable over 20 years, Rs 1 lakh to be contributed by the beneficiary in three installments and the rest coming from the government.
Land for the construction of these houses in the Krishnaraja Assembly constituency has been identified at Lalithadripura (35 acres) and Gorur 27 acres. Priority will be given to those whose children are studying in government schools, mentally and physically challenged.
Thousands of people thronged the Mysore City Corporation Zonal Office-1 on Thyagaraja Road this morning when district in-charge minister S A Ramadas launched the distribution of applications to the 'housless'. Police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
Though the launch is coming on the eve of Assembly elections, Ramadas claimed it was not an election gimmick
Elaborating on the scheme, he said, criminal action will be taken against those who submit false applications to claim a house. He also warned that if instances of offering bribes to middlemen during allotment of houses came to the knowledge of the department, such allotments would be cancelled.
The minister also launched Rs 12.53 lakh worth of works at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium. The works comprise Rs 3.15 crore synthetic track, Rs 1.41 crore hostel for sportspersons, Rs 2.85 crore for hockey turf grounds, Rs 3.62 crore swimming pool, Rs 1 crore for wooden floor, and Rs 50 lakh wrestling house.
Ramadas also held discussions with officials on the proposed visit and the schemes the chief minister will be launching on March 21.
