No rented apartments, A'bad offers hotel stay for working women

Lakshmi Ajay Mumbai/ Ahmedabad

Single women professionals in the city now have a lot to cheer for; as their accommodation woes seem to have found a solution in Ahmedabad's burgeoning realty market. In a first, city-based property dealer Tulja estate has come up with the concept of a hotel meant exclusively for working women and students. Women can now say goodbye to messy hostel rooms and time restrictions with none of the starry tariffs that hotels offer. While just like any other hotel, there are both monthly and daily charges for living here, some guests here have even signed on to live for a year.

Considering that even many residential societies in Ahmedabad have barred the renting out of apartments to single working women, the developer has come up with this innovative proposition to cater to this segment. "Many housing societies change their minds about letting out to working women and because of this, I have had to change my apartment very often in the past. This is a cause of great stress especially when one is working and hence I found that it was a good idea to move into a women's only hotel. Apart from the security that is reassuring here, we face none of the time restrictions that we had faced earlier in any other paying guest facility or hostel set up," says Beena Trivedi, a professional with an auto firm in the city.

Women can now choose between a variety of options for a stay at the hotel that has daily charges ranging anywhere between Rs 600 to Rs 800 and monthly charges that could go anywhere between Rs 6000 and Rs 12000 depending on them opting for facilities of food, ac rooms and twin sharing facilities. "Many housing societies in the past have tuned away our female tenants after a few months and some even have a strict policy against renting out to single female residents. This idea actually came from one of my female clients who expressed discontent with the living conditions for single women in the city. Apart from societal pressure, many a times women have to face time restrictions and also do not get many of the services for the rents they pay," says Bhavin Vyas, director, Tulja estate.

With 53 rooms the hotel offers 24 hours security, cctv's installed in the lobbies, ac-non ac rooms, twin sharing or single rooms and imposes no time restrictions on the women. "We understand that when you are a working professional you have a social life and so we have not kept any time restrictions. For this all we ask for is identification proof of the women we admit and also a letter from their respective college and workplace. Currently we have 15 women staying with us in the facility," adds Vyas.

Having made an initial investment of Rs 55 lakhs and with an intake of housing of 120 women, Vyas is all set to woo the steady stream of professionals moving to Ahmedabad for corporate jobs and the students studying in various educational institutes. A similar facility for men is on the anvil and Vyas informed that he has already begun construction of the facility in Satellite area.
