A day after he reviewed the internal security scenario in Meghalaya with top government and defence officials, Patil toured the Bholaganj area on the Indo-Bangla border here this morning, winding up his two-day visit to the state, before leaving for Nagaland.

The Union Minister endorsed the demand of the people living along the international border with Bangladesh for erection of the fencing on the zero line.

"There was nothing wrong in erection of the fencing on the zero line, although it may not be practicable to have the fencing on the zero line at places due to the geographical terrain," he said.

The fencing along the Indo-Bangla border had created many complications, with locals contending that the proposed line of fencing would adversely affect the territorial rights of the residents since several villages would spill over to Bangladesh.

"The main objective of the fencing is to ensure safety and security of the nation. For solving the problems, talks are on at the Home ministry level between both the countries. We believe some positive solutions will come out," Patil said.
