Spoils of the spill: Uran villagers 'loot' container biscuits

Villagers of coastal Uran, adjoining Mumbai, where a container from the cargo ship which collided with another vessel was washed ashore, today had a field day collecting thousands of packets of glucose biscuits.

The villagers were seen rushing to the beach and taking away as many packets as they could lay their hands on. They were also seen taking away several packets of tea bags which were washed ashore.

"A door of the container, which washed ashore at Uran, opened and the items, including biscuits and medicines, washed ashore," a villager said.

Some enterprising villagers even started selling the 'catch' from makeshift stalls, ignoring advise by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board officials to stay away from those goods because of the possibility of pollution.

There are also reports of at least three containers from the ship MSC Chitra washing ashore off Mandva coast near Mumbai.
