Unorganised workers' condition deplored

BS Reporter Chennai/ Mangalore
The state of un-organised workforce in the country is deplorable to say the least, said Arjun K Sengupta, chairman, National Commission For Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector, said. Delivering the Founders' Day Lecture at Karnataka Bank, Sengupta said the unorganised workforce, that constituted 77 per cent of the population lived under abysmal conditions, often under the poverty line. They spend a meagre Rs 20 per day.

Sengupta suggested a dedicated 20 per cent fund in the PSU and private banks and a free hand to lend to the deprived sector which availed less than 4 per cent of the credit.

The ownership issues and 'diktats' that be from administrative circles could do little for uplifting this sector which contributed nearly 31 per cent of the GDP, Sengupta observed.
