Varsity ups aid for PhD students

The exam will be conducted by Karnatak University and the degree certificate would be issued by it

The students pursuing PhD in Karnatak University have news to cheer. The varsity which has bagged the University of Potential Excellence (UPE) tag by the UGC will get Rs 5 crore for promoting the research work by Ph D students.

Nearly 75 per cent of the 231 candidates who have been selected by the University for pursuing Ph D in science subjectswill get Rs 8,000 allowance and Rs 10,000 for contingency expenditure per annum for three years while those doing research in humanities will get Rs 8,000 scholarship and Rs 8,000 towards contingency expenses.

KU Vice Chancellor H B Walikar on Monday said the UGC had sanctioned Rs 10 crore for a period of five years for the purpose and the scholarship would be distributed to the candidates based on merit and roaster.
 

He said 231 candidates have been selected for doing PhD and it would be possible to provide scholarship to only 171 of them. The varsity will get another Rs 50 crore under UPE by UGC for infrastructure development.

Outreach Programme
Walikar informed that under the 12th Plan the UGC had already released Rs 2.5 crore to the university and has assured release of another Rs 14 crore for various proposals sent by the varsity.

Karnatak University has sent proposal incurring an expenditure of Rs 36 crore.

Karnatak University will introduce the outreach programme in recognised educational institutions outside its purview. It has designed new courses which are not available in the varsity.

Educational institutions having suitable infrastructure would be allowed to run the courses as per the syllabus framed by the varsity in graduate, post-graduate degrees, diploma and certificate courses. The examination will be conducted by Karnatak University and the degree certificate would be issued by it. A notification inviting application for affiliation from interested institutions would be issued soon, said vice chancellor H B Walikar.

Replying to a question the V-C said he would be sending a list of 10 eligible professors to be appointed as the registrar of the University as sought by the higher education secretary and the government would appoint one among the ten as registrar. He denied reports that he was batting for a particular candidate for the post of registrar.
