German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her challenger in country's upcoming election have both said they will not participate in military strike against Syria.
Merkel made the comments during a televised debate on Sunday, as she is facing center-left rival Peer Steinbrueck on the September 22 vote, Fox News reports.
According to Fox News, Merkel said that there needs to be a collective answer by the United Nations to the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
She said she is very glad that they have a few days to revive efforts to secure U.N. action - a reference to President Barack Obama's decision to seek authorization from Congress for military action, the report said.
Steinbrueck said he would also not participate in military action against the war-torn country.
