On this island of faded gentility, Wendy Schmidt — tall, blonde and whippet thin — has long been a figure of some fascination. With sweeping views of Nantucket Sound, her cedar-shingled estate on Cliff Road is one the area’s most imposing homes, flanked by 10-foot-high shrubs for privacy. Behind a white picket fence in the front are two sculptures of sheep, which tourists bicycling by sometimes stop to photograph.
