Edible oil imports rise 41%

| In the case of refined oil, RBD palmolein imports almost doubled to 15,137 tonnes from 8,249 tonnes. | Crude palm oil (CPO) recorded an increase of 49 per cent to 2,80,498 tonnes from 1,88,007 tonnes while soybean oil imports, in the month under consideration, recorded a sharp jump of 20 per cent to 2,19,065 tonnes from 1,82,614 tonnes. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
During the first eight months of the oil year 2006-07 (November-October), the total import of edible oils stood at 2,748,861 tonnes compared with 2,588,870 tonnes for the same period last year, recording a marginal gain of 6 per cent. Similarly, non-edible oil imports also recorded a marginal gain of 6 per cent to settle at 4,50,185 tonnes compared with 4,24,338 tonnes in the same period last year.

| The import share of palm oil products (CPO, RBD palmolein, crude palmolein and crude palm kernel oil) increased to 19,49,296 tonnes (71 per cent) from 1,476,460 tonnes (57 per cent), while soft oil imports reduced to 799,556 tonnes (29 per cent) from 1,112,410 tonnes (43 per cent) during the November-June period. Within soft oil, crude soybean oil imports reduced to just 649,557 tonnes from 1,000,920 tonnes, while sunflower oil imports increased to 1,41,387 tonnes from 86,844 tonnes, thanks to further reduction in import duty on sunflower oil from 65 per cent to 50 per cent effective April 13. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
