Sensex ends above 9,300, Reliance up 2%

| The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 16 points at 9,273. After moving in a narrow range in the morning session, the index moved up to a high of 9,338 in noon deals. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 66 points (0.71%) at 9,323. All the sectoral indices, except BSE Bankex, finished with gains today. The BSE Oil & Gas Index zoomed 1.5% (67 points) to 4,423. The BSE Metal Index moved up 0.8% (52 points) to 6,355. The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.8% (44 points) to 5,730. The BSE Teck, PSU, Auto, FMCG and Healthcare indices also moved up, but the BSE Bankex declined 18 points to 4,995. Advances were ahead of declines - out of 2,541 scrips traded, 1,517 moved up, 954 declined and 70 were unchanged today. HDFC was firm right through the session, and closed with a gain of 2.3% (Rs 28) at Rs 1,218. Reliance, which touched a high of Rs 895 in intra-day deals, closed with a gain of over 2% (Rs 19) at Rs 892. A late bout of buying saw ONGC add Rs 15 to Rs 1,189. SBI, however, was down Rs 6 at Rs 892. TCS gained Rs 14 to Rs 1,704. While Wipro was up Rs 6 at Rs 463, Satyam also gained Rs 6 to Rs 731. Cipla moved up over 2% (Rs 10) to Rs 441. Hindalco was also up over 2% at Rs 139. Grasim advanced 1.5% (Rs 20) to Rs 1,356. L&T moved up Rs 18 to Rs 1,799. BHEL added Rs 14 to Rs 1,372. Tata Power, Reliance Energy, HLL, ITC and Ranbaxy also finished with gains today. Dr. Reddy's declined 1.7% (Rs 16) to Rs 950. Maruti dropped Rs 3 to Rs 627. Hero Honda and Bajaj finished with marginal declines at Rs 848 and Rs 2,000, respectively. Tata Motors, however, moved up Rs 10 to Rs 655. PSU scrips logged gains today. HMT advanced over 8% to Rs 94. BEML gained 6% (Rs 62) to Rs 1,105. SAIL, FACT, Hindustan Zinc and Neyveli also finished with gains. Bank scrips declined today. UTI Bank dropped 2.6% (Rs 10) to Rs 285. Kotak Bank slipped 2% to Rs 220. Canara Bank also declined 2% to Rs 232. Vijaya Bank, PNB, BoB and Andhra Bank also slipped today. Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 283 crore followed by KM Sugar (Rs 111 crore), SBI (Rs 98 crore), Titan (Rs 97 crore) and Infosys (Rs 73 crore). |
