After 24 years, Lanka's iconic Yal Devi train to travel to Kankasanthurai on Jan.2

Sri Lanka's famous north-bound Yal Devi train will begin services to Kankasanthurai, the last station of the Northern Line, on January 2.

In a statement, Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) said that the iconic train resumed carrying passengers to Jaffna in October this year after a 24-year lapse, and added that the 21-km-long Jaffna to Kankasanthurai segment was still under construction when the train resumed plying to Jaffna.

Lanka Page quoted Sri Lanka Railways General Manager V. Amaratunga, as saying that the Yal Devi train will start its journey to the furthest corner of the North at a special opening ceremony on the January 2. President Mahinda Rajapaksa will inaugurate the line, he added.

 

Between Jaffna and Kankasanthurai, the train will stop at Kokavil, Kondavil, Chunnakam and five more sub-train stops.

According to the official starting from January 2nd it is possible to travel from Matara to Kankasanthurai.
