The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Sunday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre for faltering on its earlier stand of not having a jumbo size Cabinet, which it said in no way looked different from the previous Congress-led UPA regime.

"In any case, Mr. Modi's Cabinet is not a small Cabinet, it is a big Cabinet. Once the Congress-led UPA-II government was unpopular, the rhetoric's and the demagogy of the BJP worked in its favour," CPI leader D.Raja told ANI here.

"Definitely, it is a big Cabinet, in what it is different from Manmohan Singh Cabinet. In terms of size it is not a small Cabinet as they claim, it is also a jumbo Cabinet, it's also a big Cabinet. Now, our point is whether the Cabinet is big or small is not the issue. The issue is what is the governance," he said.

Criticising the BJP-led NDA government further on this issue, the veteran CPI leader asked about the BJP's 'maximum governance, minimum government' slogan.

"Mr. Modi went to an extent saying, he would provide maximum governance, minimum government. But in no way his government is different from the Congress-led UPA II government. The BJP and Mr. Modi should not think that their rhetoric's and demagogy can work forever to their advantage," Raja said.

As many as 21 new faces have been sworn-in as new Union Ministers in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet.

With today's expansion, the strength of Prime Minister Modi's Cabinet has gone up from 44 to 66.

The Congress-led UPA II government reportedly had 73 ministers.
