ITV's period drama 'Downton Abbey' will come to an end after the 6th series.

The show's executive producer, Gareth Neame said "Inevitably there comes a time when all shows should end and Downton is no exception," the BBC reported.

Created by Julian Fellowes, the show, which began in 2010, follows an aristocratic family's fortunes from 1912 to the mid-1920s, and has won a series of awards including 2 Baftas, 3 Golden Globes and 11 Primetime Emmys.

The Duchess of Cambridge had recently paid visit to see it being filmed at Ealing Studios in west London.

Lord Fellowes said that the journey has been amazing for everyone aboard, and he could not even begin to explain "why the show had been such an impact and reached so many people around the world, all nationalities, all ages, all types."

However, they were grateful to have been allowed the unique experience, he added.

The show's regular stars include Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter and Dame Maggie with Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern being associated with it from the start.

Neame said they wanted to end the show when it felt right for the storylines to come together and while it was still being enjoyed by the fans.

Peter Fincham, ITV's director of television, said the nine-episode sixth series would come to an end with a "concluding special" on Christmas Day.
