Germany scored twice in the extra time to defeat underdogs Algeria and set up a quarterfinal match with France in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The three-time champions Germany failed to score in the 90 minutes but were saved from goals by forward Andre Schurrle, who scored in the first additional period, and Mesut Ozil, who doubled his side's lead in the 120th minute.

Algerian midfielder Abdelmoumene Djabou scored in just before the end of the extra time to save his side from a 2-0 loss to Germany, the BBC reported.

Although Germany are into the last eight for the 17th time in 18 World Cup appearances, Joachim Low's squad would have to improve if they want to secure a first World Cup since 1990, the report added.
