Hamas and Israel have reportedly agreed to extend the Gaza ceasefire by 24 hours following talks in Cairo, said Palestinian and Israeli officials.

Cairo, who is mediating the indirect talks between the two sides, confirmed the ceasefire agreement and said that both Israel and Hamas have agreed to continue negotiations to find a permanent solution to the conflict, reported the BBC.

The previous five-day-long ceasefire had come into effect last Wednesday and was due to expire on Monday.

Almost 2016 Palestinians and 66 Israelis have died in the conflict that began on July 8.

While Israel demands a guarantee that the Gaza-based militants would be disarmed, Hamas wants Israel to lift the economic blockade on Gaza without any pre-conditions.
