Nico Hulkenburg became the first active Formula 1 driver to win the Le Mans 24-hour race as he partnered England's Nick Tandy to victory in a Porsche, thus ending Audi's winning run.

The German, driving the number 19 car shared with New Zealand's Earl Bamber and Briton Nick Tandy, earned a record 17th win in the race for Porsche, the BBC reported.

Mark Webber was a lap behind in second in another Porsche, with Audi third.

Hulkenberg, who became the first active F1 driver to win since Britain's Johnny Herbert in 1991, said that he was speechless as he had not expected it.

Porsche's victory ended a run of 13 wins in the previous 15 editions of the race by Audi.
