Angel di Maria stepped up in the absence of talisman Lionel Messi as Argentina opened their Copa America campaign on a winning note, beating defending champions Chile 2-1 in Santa Clara on Monday night.
The Paris Saint-Germain striker produced a fantastic performance as he put Argentina ahead in the 51st minute before providing an assist to Ever Banega, who doubled his side's lead five minutes later.
Although Chile tried to stage a late comeback when Jose Pedro Fuenzalida scored a consolation goal just before the final whistle, Argentina had the last laugh as they were clearly superior with high-press and quick counter, the Guardian reported.
With the win, top-ranked Argentina secured a crucial three points and will next face co-leader Panama in Chicago.
