As many as 268 illegal migrants were apprehended in Turkey by security forces on Wednesday in three different provinces of the country, security officials said.

The Turkish security forces held 208 undocumented migrants in several operations across the northwestern Edirne province, Anadolu news agency quoted a source, as saying.

According to a security source, 47 undocumented migrants were held in Turkey's western Izmir province in another operation.

Security forces also held 13 people including five Syrians, seven Iranians and one Afghan national in the southwestern Mugla province.

All the migrants were reportedly sent to regional immigration departments.

Turkey and the European Union had signed a deal last year aimed at discouraging irregular migration through the Aegean Sea by taking stricter measures against human traffickers.
