British number one Andy Murray defeated 'King of clay,' Rafael Nadal, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 of the finals of Madrid Masters to clinch his first Masters title on clay.

The Brit, who had never beaten the Spaniard in his previous six meetings, outclassed him, stunning the home crowd.

Jubilant after the victory, Murray said that he made very few mistakes this time around and changed the height of the ball extremely well, which was part of the reason why he was mistiming the shots, the BBC reported.

The defending champion Nadal, who was aiming for a record fifth win in Madrid, had no answers to Murray's class and was unable to win even a single set.

The Spaniard, who reached the finals without dropping a single set, had shown signs of returning to his best ahead of the French Open.

However, with this defeat, Nadal has dropped to 7th place in the world rankings, the first time he has been outside the top five in a decade.
