New Napoli manager Rafael Benitez has reportedly launched a bid for Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina after the stalling of a prospective switch of Julio Cesar from Queens Park Rangers (QPR).

According to The Sun, Benitez hopes to link up with Reina after signing him for his former owners and the Anfield giants in 2005.

The report further said that Reina is aware that that he is unlikely to start the season in Liverpool following Simon Mignolet's ten million-pound arrival from Sunderland, for which a call from Benitez may seem like a career-saver for him.

Benitez left Chelsea following a successful tenure as interim manager during which he delivered the Champions League qualification and a Europa League Final victory.

The Spaniard won the Champions League while at Liverpool in 2005 and the Europa League triumph was his second win in the competition after he won it with Valencia in 2004 before moving to Anfield.
