The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday directed complete plastic ban from Gaumukh to Haridwar along river Ganga with effect from February 1, 2016.
In its order, the NGT added that industrial units would be shut down if they were found polluting Ganga.
The NGT had earlier directed that samples of water be taken from the entry and exit points of Ramganga, a tributary of the Ganga.
It had also slammed the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments for pollution in the Ramganga.
