Australia has managed to salvage their pride after a humiliating Ashes loss by beating England by 49 runs in the fifth day/night deciding one day international at Southampton on Monday to win the five-match series 2-1.

Australia had made 298 all out after winning the toss, with all-rounder Shane Watson top-scoring on 143 and sharing a fourth-wicket partnership of 163 with captain Michael Clarke (75).

According to Sport24, England did not manage to reach the target of 299 to win the series after star batsman Kevin Pietersen was bowled out for nought, despite Ravi Boapra's 62, and managed to get to 249 all out with two overs remaining.

The report mentioned that Australian left-arm fast bowler James Faulkner took three wickets for 38 runs, and for England, all-rounder Ben Stokes took an ODI best five for 61, while debutant seamer Chris Jordan took three for 51.

Australia won the second ODI at Old Trafford by 88 runs before England levelled at 1-1 with a three-wicket victory in Cardiff on Saturday after the first and fourth matches ended in rain-affected no results, the report added.
