The Home Department of the Maharashtra Government and Mumbai Police have confirmed that Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan may have received an e-mail threat about three weeks ago, and have ordered the cyber crime investigation cell of the police to probe its source.
Maharashtra's Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K.P. Bakshi was quoted, as saying that the e-mail had been taken note off and that the security detail of Rajan has been tightened. He gave no further clarifications on the issue.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria said that the cyber crime investigation cell (CCIC) of the Mumbai Police is probing the e-mail threat.
According to the police, the e-mail was allegedly sent from an ID belonging to the terrorist outfit Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and it could be a hoax.
However, police said they are taking no chances and are dealing with the issue seriously.
