ANI Imphal

Life came to a complete halt in Imphal on Tuesday as CorCom, the apex body of six major insurgent outfits of the state gave a call to boycott President Pranab Mukherjee's visit, by forcibly shutting down markets, educational institutions and public transport for 12 hours.

Transport services within Manipur and its neighbouring states were suspended in response to the shutdown call to boycott President visit to inaugurate 14th Convocation of Manipur University.

Mukherjee arrived on Tuesday on a three-hour visit. "The President coming to Manipur is a very happy event. This 'bandh' is not necessary for our state ," said Nada Singh, a resident of Imphal.

Police and para-military forces were deployed to prevent any untoward incidents during the 12 hour shutdown.

Security along Indo-Myanmar Road and Airport Road was tightened and wooden barricades were installed along both the roads to prevent any untoward incident during the President's three-hour sojourn.
