Shuttler Sindhu joins Srikanth in Rio Olympics quarters

Indian ace shuttler PV Sindhu progressed through to the quarterfinals of the women's singles event with a crushing straight games win over Tai Tzu-Ying of Chinese Taipei here at the Rio Olympics here on Tuesday.

Sindhu, the two-time bronze medallist at World Championship, recorded a thumping 21-13, 21-15 win over Tzu-Ying in an enthralling contest that lasted 40 minutes at Riocentro-Pavilion 4.

Sindhu looked completely in command of her game as she didn't allow Tzu-Ying to settle down at any stage of the gripping match. She will next take on China's Wang Yihan on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Kidambi Srikanth produced a perfect blend of power and precision to progress through to the quarterfinals after trouncing Denmark's Jan O Jorgensen 21-19, 21-19 in the men's singles event.

 

He will next play against Chinese great Lin Dan for a place in the semifinals on Wednesday.

India, which have sent their largest-ever contingent of 119 athletes in Rio Olympics, are yet to open their medal account in the ongoing Summer Games.
