ANI Karachi [Pakistan]

The counter-terrorism department (CTD) of Sindh Police has announced plans to deradicalise and rehabilitate an estimated 300 militants held in different jails of the province with the help of qualified psychologists.

Under the proposed initiative, the CTD would conduct psychological profiling of the arrested militants to ascertain the possible factors that led them to take up militancy, and thereafter, initiate moves to rehabilitate them.

Additional Inspector General of the CTD, Dr. Sanaullah Abbasi, was quoted by the Dawn, as saying that a unit of the CTD Sindh has been tasked with the responsibility to go to jails in the province and chose the militants who can be deradicalised.

Dr. Abbasi further revealed that the CTD will soon sign a memorandum of understanding, preferably with the University of Karachi or another educational institution, to seek the help of qualified psychiatrists to examine and profile high-value suspects in the future.

He said that the CTD would use these profiles as a first step to create the basis for a rehabilitation programme in Sindh.
