US lauds Ibrahim Solih on Maldives election victory

The congratulated on his victory in the recently-concluded presidential polls in the Maldives, and expressed keenness in working with the new government in areas of shared interest.

In a hotly-contested election in the island nation, Solih, a senior opposition leader, emerged victorious by garnering 134,616 votes, according to the provincial results announced by the Abdulla Yameen, however, secured 96,132 votes only.

Official results are scheduled to be announced before September 30. However, Yameen, in a televised speech on Monday, said he accepted the people's mandate and conceded defeat.
