Sanaa, July 7 (IANS/AKI) Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) on Thursday claimed responsibility for an assault on a military base near Yemen's port city of Aden that killed at least 10 soldiers, allegedly to avenge government attacks in the area.

AQAP claimed the double-suicide bombing and military assault on the Solaban military base near Aden's international airport on the Telegram messaging application, according to the US-based terrorist-tracking group SITE Intelligence.

In Wednesday's attack, two suicide bombers detonated their explosives-rigged cars, and AQAP militants then stormed the base and battled troops for several hours before government forces cleared the base, killing a number of jihadists.

Yemen has been at war since September 2014, when Iran-backed Shia Houthi rebels and their allies drove the government out of the capital Sanaa and much of the country's north.
