Nicolas Leoz, former president of the South American football confederation (CONMEBOL), has been placed under house arrest over alleged corruption, a judge in Paraguay said.

Leoz is one of 14 people accused of racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering by United States prosecutors, Xinhua reported.

A US Department of Justice indictment alleges Leoz received kickbacks over the awarding of Copa America transmission rights.

The 86-year-old is currently in hospital in the Paraguayan capital where he is being treated for high blood pressure.

Paraguay's foreign ministry has received a request from the US embassy for Leoz's arrest and extradition.

Leoz, who headed CONMEBOL from 1986 to 2013, has denied the allegations.
