A six-year-old girl in Kakra village succumbed to torture that was inflicted upon her by her maternal aunt in the name of treatment for insomnia and other problems, police said.
The girl, Vaishnavi, who died on Monday night, hailed from a nearby village Morti. She was living with her maternal grandparents for sometime.
Her aunt Babita who indulged in occult practices used to assault her brutally with a sickle claiming to cure the girl of her maladies.
The neighbours informed police when they got to know of the 'treatment'. Police rescued the girl who died on the way to hospital.
Babita and her husband were held for questioning but later released, police said.
