Emphasizing the role of 'Gurukuls' in India, Home Minister Rajnath Singh Friday said "spiritual development is as essential for a society as is materialistic growth".
"Gurukuls have been engaged in producing disciplined people who have benefited the society in many ways," he said while addressing the 112th convocation of Gurukul Kangri University in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
The minister said that "without spiritual development, the happiness cannot be long lasting".
On the occasion, he also gave away about 400 degrees and awarded gold medals to 40 students for their outstanding performance in different streams of study.
