Iraqi forces repel IS attacks in western Iraq

Iraqi security forces and allied tribesmen Saturday repelled attacks by the Islamic State (IS) militants in a military airbase housing US advisors in Iraq's western province of Anbar, a provincial security source said.

The fierce battles broke out near the town of al-Baghdadi, some 200 km northwest of the Iraqi capital of Baghdadin the early hours of the day resulted in the killing of many militants and destroying of their vehicles, a provincial security source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Al-Baghdadi town, which is the house of Albu Nimer Sunni tribe, has been under the siege of the militants for months.

 

The security situation in Iraq began to drastically deteriorate June 10, when bloody clashes broke out between the Iraqi security forces and the IS group.
