National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman Justice (retd.) K.G. Balakrishnan Monday said that since its inception 20 years ago the commission has heard and disposed off over 12 lakh complaints related to human rights violations.

"A total of 12, 80,000 complaints were received by the NHRC and out of which, more than 12,50,000 have been disposed off," he said at the inaugural function of the apex rights panel's new multi-storeyed building at GPO complex in south Delhi. Since 2005, the commission was functioning from Faridkot House in New Delhi district.

NHRC was set up and began functioning from Sardar Patel Bhavan in 1993.

A former chief Justice of India, Balakrishnan added that it was very satisfying that in almost all the cases the authorities complied with the NHRC recommendations.

He said the NHRC was deeply concerned over the rising cases of sexual assault and crimes against women. The police needs to be sensitized in dealing with women-related cases.
