President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday greeted the government and people of the South American country of Suriname on the occasion of their Independence Day.

"On behalf of the government and the people of India and on my own behalf, it gives me immense pleasure to convey to you and to the people of Suriname warm greetings and felicitations on the occasion of your Independence Day," he said in a message to his Surinamese counterpart Desire Delano Bouterse.

Stating that India and Suriname enjoy warm and friendly relations, Mukherjee said there is further scope for bilateral cooperation in diverse fields, such as healthcare, forestry, minerals, culture, infrastructure development and capacity building.

"I am sure that our relations will be strengthened further in the coming years," he added.

A former Dutch colony, Suriname became a free country on November 25, 1975. It is the smallest country in South America.
