Teenage girl commits suicide after marriage proposal rejected

A teenage girl committed suicide on Wednesday in Kolkata's Baguiati area after a local youth she was in relationship refused her marriage proposal, police said.

"Priya Roy, a Class 12 student of a New Barrackpore school, hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her house," an officer from Baguiati police station said.

Her mother, who works as a housemaid, found her hanging when she returned home in the afternoon.

Her mother said Priya was upset after her marriage proposal was rejected by the youth.

Police said they had not questioned anyone since her family had not filed any complaint.

"The exact cause of her death will be known after an autopsy," the officer added.
