Two naval officers were killed aboard accident-stricken submarine INS Sindhuratna, authorities confirmed Thursday.

"The two officers who were earlier declared missing have been located in the compartment and after examination by medical officers both the officers were declared dead," said a defence ministry press release.

Smoke filled a compartment on INS Sindhuratna while on a training mission in the Arabian Sea early Wednesday. The submarine reached the naval harbour Thursday morning.

Seven personnel were injured after smoke filled the compartment in the sailors' accommodation area.

The smoke was battled by the 94-strong crew aboard the submarine. Seven personnel who fell unconscious after inhaling it had to be airlifted to a naval hospital in Mumbai.
