McDonald's, one of the earliest foreign fast-food chains to enter India, recently started charging Rs 1 for every extra ketchup sachet. The official reason, as explained by the restaurant staff, is that this is a new rule introduced by the company. Inflationary pressures? Perhaps, but the new rule could have also been prompted by customer behaviour. Apparently, when the free sachet supplies were unlimited, customers tended to make off with large quantities of them stuffed in their bags or pockets, hence the extra charge.
