Letters: Alternative to load-shedding

This refers to the report “MPCC asks Chavan to take lead in resolving power crisis in state” (October 14). The middle- and upper-class consumers, especially in the cities, cope with the problem of load-shedding by installing inverters to meet their power requirements. Thus, there is no substantial reduction in their power consumption. It is the urban poor and rural consumers who are hit hard. Therefore, instead of load-shedding, consumers should be charged a higher rate at, say, Rs 20 a unit after they cross certain minimum units of consumption (say, 100 units a month). This is will dissuade all consumers from wasting electricity and help save precious resources.
