This refers to Veena Shenoy's letter "Singh, the scapegoat" (April 21). When Manmohan Singh became the prime minister, the nation expected a corruption-free government, given his "clean and blemish-free record", even though the levers of power were in the hands of the Gandhi family. But all that the public witnessed was a procession of scams, watched helplessly by a weak prime minister. And Singh's philosophical response to all these scams was that "coalition politics forced one to make compromises". But can there be compromises even on basic principles? Is it really such a great achievement to head a government for two terms, making heavy compromises with unscrupulous alliance partners contributing to corruption? For every government, the buck stops at the Prime Minister's Office. It is said while a statesman thinks of the next generation, a politician thinks of the next election.
