Apropos Jyoti Malhotra’s column “The Afghan gamble” (Mappings, June 15), it is clear that the Taliban is again on the rise in Afghanistan. The assassination attempts on President Hamid Karzai are clear pointers to the fact that Taliban fighters still harbour ambitions to rule Afghanistan and topple the current government.
Karzai should wake up to this growing threat that may eventually risk Afghanistan’s integrity and independence. He should formulate a strong strategy to deal with the Taliban before the US withdraws its troops from Afghanistan. As a first step, the government should launch a massive manhunt for terrorists in the region. Besides, America should continue to help Afghanistan in the fight against the Taliban insurgency because it was the US iteself that helped form the present Afghan government.
