The Media: At her first official press conference after she was nominated, she said in Hyderabad, "Sixty years after Independence, a woman has been chosen to head the nation. I am thankful to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, leaders of the UPA and the Left parties." She said the economic growth must be all-inclusive and benefit all disadvantaged sections. People: At her first rally after her nomination, she said, "It is a moving experience for me to see such a vast number of women expressing solidarity with me on this historic occasion in our democracy, when the UPA-Left and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have proposed my name."

Legislators: "In the last few days, a great deal has been written and spoken about me. I only wish to say that the allegations made against me right from the day I was made the UPA's presidential nominee are false, malicious and baseless," she told UPA legislators and MPs after the Chennai rally.
