Seller should keep the deal transparent: Rupankar Mahanta

Interview with Travel blogger, photographer, and employee of a public sector firm

Tinesh Bhasin
Your thoughts on timeshare

It's best suited for families what want to have leisure holidays with activities for all of them. Not particularly suitable for the age group of 20-30, year or people who want to go sightseeing. When I was younger, I didn't like the idea. In 2013, I ended up becoming a member.

How did you enroll?

My colleagues were talking about it and one of them showed me an online posting. An existing member was willing to transfer it for Rs 90,000. I took it.

Explain the process and experience

At first, I was a little sceptical, as it involved a big amount. The person transferring the membership sent me copies of documents for evaluation. I called the company to verify the credentials. Once I was satisfied, I went ahead and made the payment.

As a buyer, any tips for someone wanting to transfer a membership?

Keep it transparent. Give exact details of everything. A buyer might not know that plans vary with season, or about annual maintenance charges, or that booking need to be made in advance. Communicate everything to the buyer, preferably though email, so that everything is in black and while. Scan and email your documents so that the buyer can independently varify the credentials. Don't insist on cash-only payment.
