Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is targetting to increase its active membership base in Uttar Pradesh by 5 million.

The intensive membership drive would start from November 1 to March 31, 2015.

Currently, the party's membership stands at over 3 million across 1,32,000 booths and 2,402 organisational units in the state.

Digital technology would play a major role in membership drive, under which working class people, youth and students could become active members through SMS. The party would organise a training programme in Allahabad for its district presidents and membership chiefs.

BJP's pan-India digital membership campaign would begin with Prime Minister Narendra Modi becoming the first member through digital medium, followed by party president Amit Shah.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh would launch digital membership campaign in UP in the second week of November, BJP state unit president Laxmikant Bajpai Bajpai said in a press communique here today.

The party would hold camps at prominent spots under the membership campaign.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, BJP had secured 71 of the 80 seats in UP, including Varanasi, from where Narendra Modi had contested. Two seats were won by National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner Apna Dal. Thus, NDA secured 73 of 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state on the back of 'Modi wave'.

The win has enthused BJP, which had been trailing Samajwadi Party and Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) at the third spot in UP.

The assembly poll exploits in Maharashtra and Haryana has further energised BJP to prepare for the 2017 assembly polls in the state and regain power.
