The group returned with hockey sticks, iron rods and vandalised the Aiyyar hostel and also started beating up the students. They threw away all the belongings, broke laptops and mobile phones, and damaged over half-a-dozen bikes parked outside the hostel, they said.
As soon the other students came to know about the incident, they sat on a dharna and blocked the road, demanding an immediate arrest of the accused.
In the afternoon, when the police entered the Birla hostel in search of the attackers, some students allegedly began pelting stones at the policemen, after which a scuffle broke out between the policemen and students. Police had to use mild force and fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control in the campus, police said.
As many as 10 students, who were involved in the incident, have been detained, they said.
BHU chief proctor Royana Singh said few students received minor injuries and they were admitted in the trauma centre. The police is examining the CCTV footage and all the students who were involved in the ruckus will be arrested. "We will ensure that such kind of incidents are not repeated again," Singh added.
