15 people killed in a road accident in Upper Egypt

Press Trust of India  |  Cairo

At least 15 people were killed today in a deadly road accident when a microbus collided with a tractor-trailer in Upper Egypt's Beni Suef city, officials said.

The accident took place in a tunnel in the eastern desert road in Beni Suef, about 120 km south of Cairo.

One person was injured in the accident, the officials said.

Egypt has one of the world's highest accident rates owing to careless driving and poor road and vehicles conditions.

The World Health Organisation ranks Egypt as the world's tenth worst country in road accidents, after India, China and the US.

Last month, 14 people were killed and 42 injured when a bus and a pick-up truck plunged from a bridge onto a road which is linking the town of Beni Suef with the capital, Cairo.
