17-year-old girl commits suicide in Punjab

A teenaged girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan of her house here, police said today.

Chaheru Police Post Investigating Officer (IO) Daya Ram identified the woman as Manpreet Kaur (17), a resident of Chaheru village.

"Poverty had driven her to take this extreme step," he said.

He said that Kaur had passed her Class 12 examination and wanted to study further, but her parents could not afford the expenditure of her higher studies.

"This caused depression in her and it subsequently drove her to suicide. She took the extreme step yesterday," he said.

The body was handed over to the girl's family after post-mortem examination here, he said.
