2 dead in heavy rains, storm in Assam

At least two persons were killed and as many are missing across Assam following heavy rains and storm, forcing the authorities to shut the highway to Haflong for heavy vehicles.

According to a statement by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) Chief Executive Officer P K Tiwari, two persons lost their lives in Cachar district.

"One each from Cachar and Dima Hasao are missing. Also, around 637 houses suffered damage," he added.

Tiwari said 11 districts - Barpeta, Tinsukia, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Dima Hazao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Kamrup, Karimganj and Majuli - were affected by heavy rains and storm.

"Authorities have closed the Haflong-Guwahati Highway for heavy vehicular traffic due to landslide," he said adding, 400 people took shelter in two relief camps of Karimganj district, which was later closed as the situation came under control.
 

"We had a video conference with the DCs of affected districts. They have been directed to monitor the situation and immediately release ex-gratia and other funds wherever necessary," Tiwari said.
