2 killed as gypsum mine caves in

Two workers were today killed and another seriously injured after a portion of the gypsum mine caved in at a village in Uri sector of north Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said.

A group of workers got trapped when the mishap occurred at Nilosa village of Bijhama, about 90 km from here, they said.

Police said rescuers immediately swung into action and managed to rescue one worker in injured condition.

Bodies of Sajjad Ahmad Bhat (29) and Mohammad Afzal Malik (35) were later retrieved and handed over to their family for last rites, a police officer said.

The incident sparked protest by the local people, who demanded adequate compensation to the deceased and critically injured worker.
 

They also demanded necessary steps to ensure safety of people working at the mine.
